This is the second time a group Kayeta Puja has been held in the United States. This puja was performed by Newah priest Mr. Basav Rajopadhyay at the Hare Krishna Temple in Potomac, Maryland on a beautiful, sunny, and very hot summer day. Attendees enjoyed a light breakfast and delicious vegetarian lunch after the ceremony.
Ceremony began at 10:00 AM. NOA President Mr. Season Shrestha welcomed all participants, their families, and guests, expressed appreciation for their participation in this very important rite of passage. He thanked the NOA EC members and volunteers for their tireless efforts to run this event successfully, in particular Puja Coordinator, Mrs. Meena Pradhan for coordinating the puja, NOA past President, Mr. Beda Pradhan and Mrs. Bidya Pradhan for serving as Nayo and Naki, NOA immediate past President, Mr. Rajesh Shrestha and Mrs. Rohini Shrestha for providing important puja items and the sound system, Newah priest, Mr. Basav Rajopadhyay for performing the puja. Newah priest Mr. Basav Rajopadhyay initiated the Pitri (Nandimukh) Srada with Mr. Season Shrestha, inviting the ancestors of Mr. Season Shrestha, Mr. Rajesh Shrestha, and all 9 participants. The puja proceeded in a complete and fully traditional way, finishing around 3:00 PM with attendees receiving blessings from the priest. The crowd enjoyed gathering to witness the boys’ ceremonial seven steps on betel nuts and betel nut leaves, with highly entertaining and lively chases by the maternal uncles.
The festivities concluded with words of thanks from NOA President Mr. Season Shrestha to all those who contributed food and beverages and to all participants, guests, and volunteers for their support of the young men and their families, Newah culture, and NOA. It was a wonderful Kayeta Puja ceremony, and NOA is very proud to serve the Newah community in the U.S. with events like this. We warmly invite the community-at-large to join NOA in future events to continue to promote our traditions and culture.
